10 Ways to Create an Elegant, Minimalist Wedding

Wedding trends change by the season – and with that, the production level of a wedding increases in terms of the decor, venue, and food. For those who don’t want all of the bells and whistles, but still want to create an elegant wedding, minimalistic is the trending way to go!

The average cost for a wedding in Canada can range anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000+ depending on your guest count, type of wedding, and just how extravagant you want to go. However, there is nothing wrong with wanting to keep your wedding more down to earth, and simply, represents who you are. A trend we see on the rise is going the minimalist route. There are several choices –  modern minimalism (which is ideally different shapes and geometry), organic minimalist (neutral colours and adding a tinge of green), and romantic minimalism (cute quotes and adapting different calligraphy styles).

Here are a few points that will help you host a minimalist wedding:

1. Have one focal point:
Let the backdrop be simple yet powerful. Keeping the background at a minimum will let the focus be on you. How about incorporating vines and greenery to the mix to add another layer of texture? There is nothing wrong with forgoing a large backdrop and using what is already there for a change.

2. Bring in botanical elements to the venue:
Are you planning on doing custom menu cards, table numbers, or place cards? Try adding dried floral stems, bushy chandeliers, or leaves to your stationary to have a detailed impact on your guest tables. These options are elegant, impactful, and define minimal – and all add to the guest experience as they sit down.

3. Flowers –  single blooms can be striking! :
Use single bloom flowers for center pieces, or at your own sweetheart table. Don’t overload and overcrowd the generic decor with multi-coloured flowers. You don’t want your guests to get lost in a pile of flowers – keep it classy and simple.

4. Embrace the geometry:
Geometry at weddings is the new contemporary vibe. Geometry makes things clean, neat, elegant, simple, and unique. A hexagon tiered cake, a metallic square background, or a square arch are some of the examples of how to introduce symmetry at the wedding.

5. Choose your furniture wisely:
Industrial chairs are the best thing to have happened at weddings. Grey, copper, and bronze chairs are classy yet make a statement at weddings. You could also replace chairs with wooden benches for something different.

6. Decide on what you like, not how you want to impress everyone:
This is the one day, and an important day, that will stay with you for the rest of your lives. Make every decision that will make you happy, and will let you look back 10 years and say “wow, I absolutely loved and enjoyed my wedding”.  You don’t need to get married in a high-end venue just because everyone else is. Choose something that suits you and will give your guests a great experience.

7. Have a budget:
First things first, figure out how you much you want to spend on your wedding in each category. Is getting a house and saving for your honeymoon something you want to factor in before you decide how much you want to spend on your waiting? Take the time to explore your options and see where you want to best allocate your dollars.

8. Go green:
Printed invitations are becoming a thing of the past.  Digital invites are becoming more and more popular as we are moving to a world focused on communicating through the web – especially for sending save the dates out!

9. Adopt a no-gift policy:
Avoid piling up on things you already have. Check out options like The Knot Cash Fund, and giftspaces.ca, or start a honeymoon fund!

10. Choose a smart venue:
A backyard of a cafe, a well-decorated banquet hall, or a well-lit garden are options where you will have to spend less on the decor. If the venue itself is self-sufficient, the other frills can be cut out making life easier for you.

Overall, let the minimalist theme flow throughout your wedding. Using simple stationery, selective colours, unique calligraphy and font, metallic flatware, artisanal ceramics, will leave your wedding to speak for itself. Remember, at the end of the day, everyone is there to celebrate you. Don’t get caught up and lost in all of the elements that make a wedding a production. Keep reminding yourself why you are getting married, and you will create a wedding to remember!
