Thoughts from a Bride to Be – The  Plan, the Process & The Preparation

“Many of you know me as someone in the media realm, some of you know me as some of you know me as a sister, a daughter and a friend.  Well…. I am putting on a new hat, meet my new role, bride to be”  Ruchika Bindra

The moment someone knows you are getting married the first thing they scream out is “OMG how’s the planning going?”

For the longest time this really irked me as I felt it was such an overrated question. Now, as I am 3 months to the big day this sentence has so much more of a relevance.

Ideally as a bride the struggle is not to fall into that typical “bridezella” mind set but at the same time it’s so natural to have a certain vision for your wedding. I think as a bride you need to accept what vision you want and find out how to best get that without turning off your friends and family around you with an overbearing attitude.

I’m a control freak. A big one. I need to know what is happening , why it’s happening and not being in the know of something actually worries me.  I wanted to originally plan this entire wedding by myself because there were so many moments where I felt my vision or my idea was not being understood. I found myself staying up all night, creating pinterest boards, contacting numerous vendors and then it hit me….

I need to stop hoarding my wedding planning process. If I wanted to enjoy the planning stages, I would have to learn to delegate, let go and trust. Trust that those around me want the day and the events of my wedding week to turn out just as memorable as I have envisioned.

Lesson Learned : Plan with a Purpose, and Let Go..

Whether you’re a bride who wants to be a part of the planning process, selecting your own vendors or if you’re a bride who wants someone else to do it all and just update you with the details, either option requires you to let go at some stage.

My issue was I didn’t know how much to let go because I didn’t have a set idea on how to bring my vision to life.

I ended up visiting the amazing Kismet Wedding Show this year and was amazed. There it was… all the vendors, all the help I needed in one place. No more all nighters on pinterest, no more thousands of emails to numerous vendors in hopes of a reply.

I was finally at a place which felt organized, and I could actually meet these vendors and get an idea of the different offerings. Why didn’t I think of saving time like this earlier?

My family is the traditional big Punjabi family. Everyone wants to be a part of everything and everyone wants to know everything. I knew that the modern day concept of a wedding planner wouldn’t work for my household dynamics. Taking the tasks away from my loved ones is something they wouldn’t want as they want to enjoy the whole planning and creating process.

As much as I wanted everyone to be involved I still felt lost. I had so many ideas but no concrete sense of how I was going to execute or where to start.  I knew I needed some help, but what? Who? How?

I came across Susan Ramroop, at the Kismet show. She was the founder of Beyoutiful Beginnings, and when I told her I didn’t want a wedding planner but someone to guide me she understood my needs right away. She told me how there is a package called “consulting” and this option was perfect as it was for couples like myself that want to plan their entire wedding from start to end but need advice, and guidance. She helped me set a budget, she gave me vendor suggestions based on her industry knowledge, she suggested details relating to my vision and finally it was like I now had concrete ideas, and  a proper outline and path to help my dream wedding come alive.

This saved me so much time, and I wish I had known this at the earlier stages… At least I can catch up on sleep now…

My Bridal Tip of the Week:

You need someone to put things in perspective for you. It can be a wedding planner for the entire wedding, a day of coordinator or a consulting guidance like I did. It will help you steer the wheel of your wedding in the right planning direction.

Until Next Time,
